Periwinkles Flowers

Periwinkles, also known as Vinca, are charming, hardy plants that are popular in gardens for their ability to thrive in a variety of conditions. The term “Periwinkles” can refer to two main types:

  1. Vinca minor (Common Periwinkle or Dwarf Periwinkle):
    • Appearance: Vinca minor typically has small, glossy, dark green leaves and produces small, star-shaped flowers. The flowers are usually blue or violet, but can also be white or pink, depending on the variety.
    • Growth Habit: This species is a trailing groundcover that spreads quickly and is often used for erosion control, underplanting shrubs, or covering shaded areas.
    • Conditions: It prefers partial to full shade and well-drained soil, but it’s quite tolerant of less ideal conditions.
  2. Vinca major (Greater Periwinkle):
    • Appearance: Vinca major has larger leaves and flowers compared to Vinca minor. The flowers are typically a bit larger and can range in color from blue to violet.
    • Growth Habit: It also serves as a groundcover but tends to be more aggressive in its spreading habit.
    • Conditions: Like Vinca minor, Vinca major prefers partial shade to full shade and well-drained soil but can adapt to a variety of growing conditions.

Both types are admired for their long blooming period, often from spring through the summer, and their low-maintenance care. They are especially useful in shaded gardens where other flowering plants might struggle.

One key aspect to remember with periwinkles is their invasive potential. Due to their vigorous growth, they can sometimes outcompete native plants. It’s advisable to manage their spread carefully and be mindful of where you plant them.
